The Coronavirus crisis is affecting almost everyone’s routines, transportation, and way of life. This means that the usual social support and contacts older adults have with others may be diminished. For homebound seniors without support networks, this can be devastating.

In response, Deerfield Township is partnering with United Way of Warren County Volunteer Resource Center and Warren County Community Services for an “Adopt a Senior” program. This program asks members of the community to purchase from a list of specific items to create care packages that Warren County Community Services can deliver to older adults who are sheltered in place during this time.

Community members are invited to help, while maintaining social distancing, in two ways:

1. Serve as a Neighborhood Captain. Neighborhood Captains will share information about this program through their neighborhood’s social media sites, and use their front porch as a drop off location. Packages will be collected from the front porch by volunteers on Tuesday, April 7th at 2:00 pm. No contact is necessary to be a Neighborhood Captain.

2. Shop for the needed items between now and April 7th.

Providing just five items from the following list can make a huge difference to the quality of life for a local senior:

  • Hand sanitizer
  • Hand soap
  • Bar soap
  • Shampoo
  • Tooth paste
  • Hand lotion
  • Tissues
  • Paper Towels
  • Deodorant
  • Disinfectant wipes
  • Dish soap
  • Hard candies (lifesavers, butterscotches etc.)

After purchasing, simply put sealed / unopened items in a shopping bag, check off the items that were purchased on the list (printable list available separately) and attach it to the outside of the bag. You can then drop the package off at your Neighborhood Captain’s doorstep by 2:00 pm on Tuesday, April 7th.

Coordination with Neighborhood Captains is the preferred method of delivery to maintain limited level of exposure, but Individuals can also bring package donations directly to Warren County Community Services (570 N State Route 741, Lebanon Ohio 45036) on April 9th and 10th between the hours of 2PM and 4PM.
